Computer Engineering and Business Administration (5 year program)
The ECE Department and the Daniels College of Business also offer programs leading to the following Engineering degrees and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 5 years of study: the Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering/Master of Business Administration (BSCPE/MBA); the Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering/Master of Science in Business Administration (BSEE/MBA).
Engineering curricula are highly structures; acquisition of certain knowledge and skills must preede acquisition of more advanced ones. There is thus very little flexibility in the order in which courses must be completed, and there are few electives. Most engineering courses are offered only once a year, so an omission or deletion can add a year to the tme required to complete the degree program. Although a high percentage of our students graduate in four years, it should be noted that, nationwide, nearly half of all engineering graduates take more than four years to complete their degrees, so students should not ecome discouraged if this is needed. The additional year may also be used to acquire additional expertise.
Common Curriculum: the curricula in all programs are the same for the first two years; a student chooses the BSCPE, BSEE, or BSME at the beginning of the third year.
Advanced Curriculum: the curricula for the last three years have several components:
1. Advanced work in the engineering discipline chosen;
2. Integrated engineering project work and design;
3. Completion of the University General Education curriculum;
4. Completion of the requirements for the MBA
It should be noted that these five-year curricula are highly intensive, and there is little opportunity to develop a specialization without further study.
Prior to entering the fourth year of study, the student must take the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), and apply and be admitted to the Graduate School of the Daniels College of Business. Generally, a minimum score of at least 590 on the GMAT is required for admission, as well as a 3.00+ grade point average over the previous two years of study. It is strongly recommended that students take the GMAT and apply prior to January 15 of the third year to assure admission for the following fall. A two-week orientation, testing, and training session is required just prior to entrance into the MBA Program. For students entering in the Autumn Quarter, this session occurs in the two weeks just preceding the Autumn Quarter.
The MBA requires 72 credit hours; 56 credits of which are required MBA courses. The remaining 16 credits are electives, no more than four credits of which may be at the 3000 level. At least 12 credits of these electives are to be taken from 4000 level courses approved by the Graduate School of the Daniels College of Business. Each undergraduate engineering program contains at least four 3000 level credits aside from the senior design project. Note that the listed curricula assume that the student is using four credits of engineering courses toward the 16 elective credits required. All elective credits must be in courses which could be used toward a graduate degree. No more than 10 credits may be in Independent Study. The degrees are awarded concurrently upon completion of the requirements for both.
As these programs must meet the standards of two different accrediting agencies, there may be changes made to the curricula as stated on this webpage. Students must check with advisors in both Engineering and the Graduate School of the Daniels College of Business during preregistration periods to ensure that they are taking the required courses for both degrees.
NOTES
AHSS 1000 AHUM 1000 and SOCS 1000. These may be taken in any order. There must, however, be two of each of them.
CORE 2XXX Thematic Core. Engineering students are required to take only two Thematic Core courses, but the two must be from different themes where CORE 24XX are the Communities and Environments theme, CORE 25XX are the Self and Identities theme and CORE 26XX are the Change and Continuity theme.
OOOO Open Elective. The Open Elective may be any course offered in which the student has an interest and which is at the 1000 level or above.
XXXX Technical Elective. Technical Electives are used to complete specializations for the degree. Only technical courses may be used, and these must carry Upper-Division credit. Prior approval by the advisor is required.
