Engineering with concentration in Management
The advanced study of Engineering Management is offered as an area of concentration within the Master of Science in Engineering degree (MSE) at the University of Denver (DU). Students may apply to either the Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME) Department if they wish to pursue the MSE with a concentration in the field of management (ENMG). The MSE degree program is designed to advance the knowledge of students in areas other than those in which they received their bachelor's degree. The program is particularly intended for students with bachelor's degrees in the natural sciences, mathematics, computer science, or with engineering degrees who are making a change of discipline, wanting to develop expertise in an engineering area, or wanting to increase their knowledge and expertise in the management of engineering functions or enterprises, often in fields of emerging importance or interdisciplinary in nature. The Engineering Management concentration combines a focus in a field of engineering with a complement of management courses that can be tailored to address the student's specific interests.
The Concentration in Engineering Management meets the desire and need of students to enhance their career opportunities as managers or as entrepreneurs by supplementing advanced engineering knowledge with a fundamental understanding of business principles and leadership skills within the context of technology enterprises. The Engineering Management curriculum is designed to provide a multidisciplinary education needed by engineering professionals to be successful in today’s global marketplace for goods, services and ideas. Drawing upon the strengths of both the School of Engineering and Computer Science and the Daniels College of Business at DU, the concentration in Engineering Management emphasizes creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship skills that provide relevant content for graduates to lead the next generation of engineering enterprises.
Candidates for the degree of Master of Science in Engineering with a Concentration in Management are required to complete 45 quarter hours, at least 36 of which must be completed at the University of Denver, and must maintain a grade level of B or better. The Engineering Management program requires 24 quarter hours of engineering courses, 18 quarter hours of management courses, and 3 quarter hours of engineering mathematics. A non-thesis track only is offered.
Admissions Requirements
A Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics or Computer Science is required for admission to the MSE (ENMG) program. Students may also be required to complete prerequisite undergraduate courses; such courses are not considered part of the 45 credit hour requirement for the degree. Students who do not have an undergraduate engineering degree are not eligible for a Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) upon entry.
All students must have completed at least one year of college level physics of a level that leads to further study in physics, and a minor in mathematics, which must include a year of calculus and a course in differential equations. Students must also be competent in computer programming (for example: ability to write code for research).
Depending upon the student's area of interest and focus, other prerequisite courses that may not apply to the 45 credit hour requirement may also be required. These are determined by the student's declared interest and previous background. The declared interest is therefore an essential part of the graduate application. Students may be admitted provisionally while they take the appropriate prerequisite courses.
